Finding Your True Identity in a World of Distorted Mirrors
From a young age, I wrestled with a question many of us face: Do I measure up? My identity was rooted in performance—being the perfect daughter, excelling at school, and later, being a “good” mom. But when my children turned away from their faith, my carefully constructed identity crumbled. I was left asking, Who am I if I’ve failed as a mother? Am I valuable? Am I worthy of love?
We all face these questions. Too often, we tie our worth to our achievements, possessions, or the approval of others. When life falls apart, feelings of failure and unworthiness creep in. That’s because we’re measuring ourselves by the wrong standard. Our true identity doesn’t come from what we do, what we own, or even what’s been done to us—it comes from who we are as God’s creation.
The Bible tells us in its opening chapter: every human being is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). We are designed to reflect His character and love in the world. But in the garden, humanity lost its sense of identity and purpose. Ever since, we’ve been looking in distorted mirrors—careers, relationships, and status—that give us a warped reflection of who we are.
Thankfully, God didn’t leave us lost. He came to us in Jesus, the perfect mirror. Jesus reveals who God is and who we were created to be. He restores what was lost in the garden and invites us to find our true identity in Him. Our worth isn’t based on successes or failures but on the unchanging truth that we are God’s dearly loved children.
When we turn to Christ, we come home to our true identity. After years of heartache, God’s love and mercy brought each of my children back to Him, restoring their true identity in Christ.
In a world struggling with an identity crisis, knowing who we are in Christ is the key to living the life God designed for us. He’s not holding out on you! What was lost in the garden is FOUND in Jesus. Let Him show you who you truly are and all that’s available to you.
